2001 OCA Asian American Achievement Awards Gala
Saturday, September 15, 2001
South San Francisco Conference Center

This year's Asian American Achievement Awards Gala was very memorable. After much deliberation, we had decided to still have the awards dinner the weekend after the awful September 11 terrorist attacks. Everyone was certainly worried about friends and family who were affected, and we weren't even sure that Helen Zia was going to be able to fly out.

In hindsight, though, that decision turned out to be the right one. Our theme this year was "Diversity Enriches the Greatness of America", which had new meaning after the events earlier that week. Our speakers reminded us that our society's openness and diversity of cultures and opinions is what makes America the great nation that she is. Furthermore, it is going to be very important that we all remember the many civil liberties we enjoy as Americans, and not forget them in this time of crisis. As Chinese and Asian Americans, we have fought for equality and civil rights - and we now need to keep an eye out to make sure that Muslims and Middle Eastern Americans are not wrongly scapegoated and attacked out of hate.

Lastly, we had to help show that America will not be stopped by terrorists. This was a good time for us to join together as Americans. OCA San Mateo has decided to contribute a portion of the funds raised at the Gala towards the relief funds. OCA San Mateo wishes to thank all of our Gala sponsors, and send our condolences to everyone who has been affected by the tragic events of September 11.
