Here's the "Scoop" from the 2001 National OCA Convention!
(well, maybe it's a rice scoop, but nonetheless...)
LIVE! FROM SEATTLE!

July 26: Opening night reception with Asian American dancers, authors,
and poets. A few of us ventured out to dinner in Seattle's Chinatown.
OCA San Mateo chapter conference attendees include President Johnny
"Thunderstick" Ng, VP Alden Soohoo, "Uncle" Wade Loo, Treasurer Canyon
Chan, Armand & Micheline Chau, Yvonne Chen and her husband Sam.
| July 27: Early this morning, everyone rolled out of
their beds early for the 7 a.m. roll call for the first half of the
National OCA Board meeting. The morning sessions started at 9
a.m., along with the job fair and corporate exhibits where everyone
could collect tons of fun but rather useless knick-knacks that take
up all of the room in suitcases (see --->>>), all the while
talking to potential employers.
At noon, we attended the Allstate Insurance Scholarship Awards
Luncheon. National President George Ong helped to present the
winners of the OCA Essay Contest and the OCA Journalist Awards. The
keynote speech was given by Ismael Ileto, younger brother of
Filipino American Joseph Ileto, who was killed by a white
supremacist in August 1999. In an inspiring yet touching
speech, Ismael recounted the day when he received the news of his
brother's death and his subsequent decision to honor his brother by
helping to educate others on the effects of hate crime.
At the end of the lunch, Chapter Development VP Ken Lee announced
the OCA Chapter of the Year Awards to recognize individual chapters
for their outstanding activities during the past year. We are
ecstatic to say that we have won three awards! We received
these three awards:
- First place for Economic Development
- Third place for Overall Chapter of the Year
- Third place for Excellence in Projects/Programs
